D. Nettles Rick is the real deal, a living blues player, from shooting sparks in swampy north Florida clubs as a a round, brace-faced teen to now, writing and performing alongside incredible talents around the world such as Jimmy Herring and Jamison Ross. He is miles away from the unfortunate styrofoam blues peddled by the likes of… I’m not gonna say their names. But understand: they are merely the shadows on the wall of the cave, and Rick Lollar is a bright light leading the tradition forward.

Ain't a thing 'bout to mess with my mood tonight I've got a stack of vinyl records that's sure to make me feel all right You can't help but feel warm when you hear that sound With that crackle and hiss, you can't miss what's about to go down We're gonna have a soulful hang Gonna have a soulful hang It's gonna be a soulful thing Gonna have a soulful hang A soulful hang is a thing that's born from rhythm It's a groove between me and you Locked into the swing, you know that we're really livin' When you're hittin' the note, you've got soul and I feel it too Gonna have a soulful hang Gonna have a soulful hang It's gonna be a soulful thing Gonna have a soulful hang

Tell me something's easy, I'll show you it's not There's an instruction manual I must have forgot The simplest task I make complicated It's an unfortunate condition which I have created When all the world's problem's just aren't enough I'll find a way to worry about even more stuff Not having a reason is reason, reason enough I wrote you a long letter without any words I've sung the finest songs without being heard I can't be bothered to make myself known I'm too damn neurotic to pick up my phone When all the world's problem's just aren't enough I'll find a way to worry about even more stuff Not having a reason is reason, reason enough

I've been drivin' A long way to get here One thing on my mind It's been so long Want to see you If you'd be so kind We've been talkin' for some time now Need to feel you near Here I come babe No more waiting Just so things are clear And you know I'm on my way It'd be my pleasure to stay And you know I'm on my way Just try to keep me away You've been wonderin' About my intentions If my aim is true One thing's certain I've been drivin' Tryin' to get to you And you know I'm on my way It'd be my pleasure to stay And you know I'm on my way Just try to keep me away

Don't know much about playing games I get the sense that you do I was down for the count, but now I'm coming to Don't have a mind for dishonesty A lying tongue ain't a part of me I may be blinded by love, but even I can see Something's happening here that just ain't right I think that I know better, when you say: It's all right (there's nothing going on) Everything's just fine (I'd never do you wrong) It's all right (we always get along) When I know I'm off your mind Pity in your eyes when you look at me Can't seem to get you alone And even when I do, it's like you're made of stone Hold you close but you're far away And I don't know where you go But I can feel that you're gone, and I'm catching on Something's happening here that just ain't right I think that I know better, when you say: It's all right (there's nothing going on) Everything's just fine (I'd never do you wrong) It's all right (we always get along) When I know I'm off your mind

Don't you mind people grinnin' in your face Don't you mind people grinnin' in your face You just bear this in mind: a true friend is hard to find Don't you mind people grinnin' in your face You know your friends will talk about you Your brothers and your sisters too They don't care how you're trying to live Yes, they'll talk about you still You just bear this in mind: a true friend is hard to find Don't you mind people grinnin' in your face You know they'll jump you up and down Turn you all round and round And just when your back is turned They'll be trying to push you down You just bear this in mind: a true friend is hard to find Don't you mind people grinnin' in your face

You wake up every single morning With a bug inside your brain You might see it as a warning There's a hole inside your lonely mind, my friend All your plans and good intentions Couldn't change the shape you're in Too many lost friends to even mention And the blame, it lies behind vacant eyes of sin It's past time to stop talking About what you're going to do And it's high time to get walking And find something true You tried to hide away your sickness With a grin that falls too easy on your lips But it's clear to any careful witness That it's just a ruse, you are born to lose again It's past time to stop talking About what you're going to do And it's high time to get walking And find something true

about

With his debut release, Soulful Hang EP, Atlanta-based guitarist, singer, and songwriter Rick Lollar displays a heart that's always belonged to the blues, the intellect of a jazz improviser, and a penchant for rootsy songwriting with tight arrangements, but he really just wants to make you dance. The EP's five original tracks (and one muscular arrangement of a Son House tune) cover a lot of stylistic ground--taut funk grooves, minor-key balladry, Memphis soul, unabashed rocking out--but it's clear that Lollar views it all through the lens of the blues.
